Community Love

We love volunteering with homegrown projects. Here’s just some of the volunteering efforts we are part of:

Growing Food

As a member of the Dundee Hill Community Garden in Port Townsend, we grow food for the members and the local food bank. This garden is located in the Dundee Hill neighborhood and was launched in 2007, and has become a second home to many and a food lover’s playground. We grow enough for all twenty members to take home and are still able to donate hundreds of pounds of the freshest produce to our food bank with each summer harvest.

Local Advising

Founded in 1939, Jefferson County PUD has continually evolved to serve the growing needs of the County. Now delivering water, power, and broadband, the PUD staff and the Board of Commissioners works alongside the Citizen’s Advisory Board. Now closed as a committee, Kellen was grateful to understand the PUD better and its many faceted work as a member of the Advisory Board.

Feeding People

In 2013, Kellen of New Story Studio and a group of friends gathered with the idea to build community through celebration, and how to do that better than through cake. Cake Picnic is an annual all-volunteer gathering every May during the Rhododendron Festival and every year thousands gather in historic Port Townsend to feast on locally made organic cake, for free. This is what community love is all about. See more at The Production Alliance website.

Since 2022, Kellen has also been helping lead the feast production for the Canoe Journeys effort in Qatay (Port Townsend), the ancestral home of the Coast Salish people where he lives and was raised.

Building Shelters

Taking the first step towards a solution requires courage and vision, and thankfully our community is filled with both. Volunteering alongside the Community Build team is an inspiration and in their first three years they constructed 43 new tiny shelters for our local community. Supported by non-profits Bayside Housing and OlyCAP, this all-volunteer team is creating a new culture of giving and participation that has opened the hearts and minds of many and encouraged definitive action on housing issues.
